Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions
Rapid, irregular atrial contractions caused by a block of electrical impulse conduction in the right atrium and a reentrant wave front traveling up the inter-atrial septum and down the right atrial free wall or vice versa. Unlike ATRIAL FIBRILLATION which is caused by abnormal impulse generation, typical atrial flutter is caused by abnormal impulse conduction. As in atrial fibrillation, patients with atrial flutter cannot effectively pump blood into the lower chambers of the heart (HEART VENTRICLES).
A cardiotonic glycoside obtained mainly from Digitalis lanata; it consists of three sugars and the aglycone DIGOXIGENIN. Digoxin has positive inotropic and negative chronotropic activity. It is used to control ventricular rate in ATRIAL FIBRILLATION and in the management of congestive heart failure with atrial fibrillation. Its use in congestive heart failure and sinus rhythm is less certain. The margin between toxic and therapeutic doses is small. (From Martindale, The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 30th ed, p666)
Moving oneself through space while confused or otherwise cognitively impaired. Patterns include akathisia, exhibiting neuroleptic-induced pacing and restlessness; exit seekers who are often newly admitted institution residents who try to open locked exit doors; self-stimulators who perform other activities such as turning doorknobs, in addition to continuous pacing; and modelers who shadow other pacers.
An anticoagulant that acts by inhibiting the synthesis of vitamin K-dependent coagulation factors. Warfarin is indicated for the prophylaxis and/or treatment of venous thrombosis and its extension, pulmonary embolism, and atrial fibrillation with embolization. It is also used as an adjunct in the prophylaxis of systemic embolism after myocardial infarction. Warfarin is also used as a rodenticide.
Atrial Premature Complexes
A type of cardiac arrhythmia with premature atrial contractions or beats caused by signals originating from ectopic atrial sites. The ectopic signals may or may not conduct to the HEART VENTRICLES. Atrial premature complexes are characterized by premature P waves on ECG which are different in configuration from the P waves generated by the normal pacemaker complex in the SINOATRIAL NODE.
The aim of this study is to test the impact of the managed ventricular pacing (MVP) mode and atrial preventive and antitachycardia pacing therapies on the reduction of a composite clinical...
The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the safety and effectiveness of biventricular pacing over conventional right ventricular pacing in patients with persistent or permanent, sympto...
The purpose of this study is to compare the effect of metoprolol, verapamil, diltiazem and carvedilol on ventricular rate, working capacity and quality of life in patients with chronic atr...
In patients with a standard indication for pacing and no previous history of AF, detection of Atrial High Rate Episodes predicts an increased risk of stroke and systemic embolism. Overdri...
Postoperative new-onset atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common complication stemming from coronary artery bypass graft surgery, and is associated with increased early and late morta...
The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical and rhythm outcomes between left atrial ablation and biatrial ablation in patients with atrial fibrillation-associated mitral valve diseases.
This study aims to observe the effects of ibutilide on canine cardiac pacing threshold and on induction rates of atrial fibrillation. Eighteen mongrel dogs were anesthetized and administrated with ibu...
BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with activity of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). Reduction in renal noradrenaline spillover could be achieved after renal sympathetic de...
Cardiac pacing is ineffective in obstructive sleep apnea (SA), but it can alleviate central SA/Cheyne-Stokes respiration (CSA) in patients with heart failure (HF). We examined whether overnight overdr...
