Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions
Sepsis
Systemic inflammatory response syndrome with a proven or suspected infectious etiology. When sepsis is associated with organ dysfunction distant from the site of infection, it is called severe sepsis. When sepsis is accompanied by HYPOTENSION despite adequate fluid infusion, it is called SEPTIC SHOCK.
Fungemia
The presence of fungi circulating in the blood. Opportunistic fungal sepsis is seen most often in immunosuppressed patients with severe neutropenia or in postoperative patients with intravenous catheters and usually follows prolonged antibiotic therapy.
Myelinolysis, Central Pontine
A demyelinating condition affecting the PONS and characterized clinically by an acute progressive QUADRIPLEGIA; DYSARTHRIA; DYSPHAGIA; and alterations of consciousness. Pathologic features include prominent demyelination in the central PONS with sparing of axons and neurons. This condition is usually associated with systemic disorders such as HYPONATREMIA; chronic ALCOHOLISM; LIVER FAILURE; severe BURNS; malignant NEOPLASMS; hemorrhagic PANCREATITIS; HEMODIALYSIS; and SEPSIS. The rapid medical correction of hyponatremia has been cited as a cause of this condition. (From Adams et al., Principles of Neurology, 6th ed, pp1125-6)
Shock, Septic
Sepsis associated with HYPOTENSION or hypoperfusion despite adequate fluid resuscitation. Perfusion abnormalities may include, but are not limited to LACTIC ACIDOSIS; OLIGURIA; or acute alteration in mental status.
Bilophila
A genus of gram-negative, anaerobic bacteria in the family Desulfovibrionaceae. It was originally recovered from infections in patients with gangrenous and PERFORATED APPENDICITIS. It is also associated with ABSCESS; BACTEREMIA; and BILIARY TRACT sepsis.
Clinical Trials
Alterations of Immunologic Mediators During Severe Sepsis
Severe sepsis induces significant changes in expression of insulin- and toll-like receptors, cytokines, markers of apoptosis, and activation of t- and b-lymphocytes.
Investigation of the Efficacy and Safety of Drotrecogin Alfa (Activated) in Pediatric Severe Sepsis
The purposes of this study are to determine: 1. Whether drotrecogin alfa (activated) helps children with severe sepsis survive their condition more often or recover faster than chi...
Evaluation of MorphoTEP With the FDG Among Patients in Severe Sepsis of Unspecified Etiology
The objective of this pilot study is to estimate a procedure where the biological samples routinely obtained at the site of suspected infection could be guided by the early realization of...
Scandinavian Starch for Severe Sepsis/Septic Shock Trial
- By tradition hydroxyethyl starch (HES) is used to obtain fast circulatory stabilisation in critically ill. - High molecular weight HES may, however, cause acute kidney failure...
Efficacy & Safety of Resatorvid in Adults With Severe Sepsis
The purpose of this study is to determine the optimal dose of Resatorvid for reducing 28-day all-cause mortality in subjects with severe sepsis.

Mortality and quality of life in the five years after severe sepsis.
INTRODUCTION: Severe sepsis is associated with high levels of morbidity and mortality placing a high burden on healthcare resources. We aimed to study outcomes in the 5 years after severe sepsis. METH...

Similar inflammatory response in alcoholic and non-alcoholic sepsis patients.
It is well known that alcoholics are prone to severe infections and that the immune system is impaired by chronic ethanol abuse. The aim of this study is to compare serum inflammatory mediators in res...
ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Current knowledge on the exact ligand causing expression of TREM-1 on neutrophils and monocytes is limited. The present study aimed at the role of underlying infection and of th...
Clinical value of the sepsis bundles and modes of implementation.
The sepsis bundles comprise the most important steps that have to be made in the first 24 hours following the sepsis diagnosis. Being comprehensive and manageable, they can be implemented in every ICU...
