Does Post-Operative Prophylaxis With Macrobid Reduce the Incidence of Post-Operative Urinary Tract Infection in Patients Undergoing Placement of a Sub-Urethral Sling for the Treatment of Stress Urinary Incontinence
Summary
This project will be a randomized, double blinded, placebo controlled clinical trial. The aim of the trial is to determine whether or not post-operative prophylaxis with macrobid will decrease the incidence of postoperative urinary tract infection in women receiving sub-urethral slings for the treatment of urinary incontinence.

Nitrofurantoin
A urinary anti-infective agent effective against most gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. Although sulfonamides and antibiotics are usually the agents of choice for urinary tract infections, nitrofurantoin is widely used for prophylaxis and long-term suppression.
Fournier Gangrene
An acute necrotic infection of the SCROTUM; PENIS; or PERINEUM. It is characterized by scrotum pain and redness with rapid progression to gangrene and sloughing of tissue. Fournier gangrene is usually secondary to perirectal or periurethral infections associated with local trauma, operative procedures, or urinary tract disease.
Bacteriuria
The presence of bacteria in the urine which is normally bacteria-free. These bacteria are from the URINARY TRACT and are not contaminants of the surrounding tissues. Bacteriuria can be symptomatic or asymptomatic. Significant bacteriuria is an indicator of urinary tract infection.
