Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions
High Pressure Neurological Syndrome
A syndrome related to increased atmospheric pressure and characterized by tremors, nausea, dizziness, decreased motor and mental performance, and SEIZURES. This condition may occur in those who dive deeply (c. 1000 ft) usually while breathing a mixture of oxygen and helium. The condition is associated with a neuroexcitatory effect of helium.
Helium
Helium. A noble gas with the atomic symbol He, atomic number 2, and atomic weight 4.003. It is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that is not combustible and does not support combustion. It was first detected in the sun and is now obtained from natural gas. Medically it is used as a diluent for other gases, being especially useful with oxygen in the treatment of certain cases of respiratory obstruction, and as a vehicle for general anesthetics. (Dorland, 27th ed)
Inert Gas Narcosis
Progressive mental disturbances and unconsciousness due to breathing mixtures of oxygen and inert gases (argon, helium, xenon, krypton, and atmospheric nitrogen) at high pressure.
Air
The mixture of gases present in the earth's atmosphere consisting of oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and small amounts of other gases.
Oxygen Consumption
The rate at which oxygen is used by a tissue; microliters of oxygen STPD used per milligram of tissue per hour; the rate at which oxygen enters the blood from alveolar gas, equal in the steady state to the consumption of oxygen by tissue metabolism throughout the body. (Stedman, 25th ed, p346)
Clinical Trials
The primary objective of the study is to evaluate the efficacy of Helium/Oxygen (He/O2) 78%/22% compared to a conventional Air/O2 mixture in reducing endotracheal intubation rate and morta...

Safety Study of Home Oxygen Therapy for Children With Acute Bronchiolitis
Home oxygen therapy is considered an appropriate and relatively safe option for children with chronic respiratory problems such as chronic lung disease of prematurity, but the use of home...
Intermittent Versus Continuous Pulse Oximetry Monitoring of Infants Admitted for Bronchiolitis
Bronchiolitis is a lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) syndrome cause by different types of viruses and occurs in young children. Although bronchiolitis is a widespread and fairly co...
Effectiveness of an Oxygen-nitrous Oxide Mixture During Physical Therapy for Frozen Shoulder
The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not the use of an equimolar mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide during the physical therapy for patients suffering from frozen shoulder...

Helium-oxygen reduces the production of carbon dioxide during weaning from mechanical ventilation.
ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Prolonged weaning from mechanical ventilation has a major impact on ICU bed occupancy and patient outcome, and has significant cost implications. There is evidence in patients ar...
Contrasting pressure-support ventilation and helium-oxygen during exercise in severe COPD.
Helium-oxygen mixtures and pressure-support ventilation have been used to unload the respiratory muscles and increase exercise tolerance in COPD. Considering the different characteristics of these tec...
Impact of home oxygen therapy on hospital stay for infants with acute bronchiolitis.
Acute bronchiolitis has been associated with an increasing hospitalization rate over the past decades. The aim of this paper was to estimate the impact of home oxygen therapy (HOT) on hospital stay fo...
