A Study to Characterize Epidemiology, Clinical and Genetic Features of Kallmann Syndrome in Finland

19:39 EDT 18th May 2013 | BioPortfolio

Summary

Objective is to characterize epidemiology, clinical and genetic features of Kallmann syndrome in Finland.

Description

Kallmann syndrome is comprised of idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and anosmia (inability to smell). Associated phenotypes may include cryptorchidism, microphallus, bone deformations, mirror movements, hearing loss and infertility. Objective is to characterize epidemiology, clinical and genetic features of Kallmann syndrome in Finland.

Study Design

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Substance Withdrawal Syndrome

Physiological and psychological symptoms associated with withdrawal from the use of a drug after prolonged administration or habituation. The concept includes withdrawal from smoking or drinking, as well as withdrawal from an administered drug.

Testosterone Congeners

Steroidal compounds related to TESTOSTERONE, the major mammalian male sex hormone. Testosterone congeners include important testosterone precursors in the biosynthetic pathways, metabolites, derivatives, and synthetic steroids with androgenic activities.

Gonadotropins

Hormones that stimulate gonadal functions such as GAMETOGENESIS and sex steroid hormone production in the OVARY and the TESTIS. Major gonadotropins are glycoproteins produced primarily by the adenohypophysis (GONADOTROPINS, PITUITARY) and the placenta (CHORIONIC GONADOTROPIN). In some species, pituitary PROLACTIN and PLACENTAL LACTOGEN exert some luteotropic activities.

Danazol

A synthetic steroid with antigonadotropic and anti-estrogenic activities that acts as an anterior pituitary suppressant by inhibiting the pituitary output of gonadotropins. It possesses some androgenic properties. Danazol has been used in the treatment of endometriosis and some benign breast disorders.

Dihydrotestosterone

A potent androgenic metabolite of TESTOSTERONE. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is generated by a 5-alpha reduction of testosterone. Unlike testosterone, DHT cannot be aromatized to ESTRADIOL therefore DHT is considered a pure androgenic steroid.

it has been shown that androgens in non human primates may favour follicular growth in the ovaries when animals are treated with gonadotropins which are the hormones used in patients recei...

Examination of Idiopathic Hypogonadotropic Hypogonadism (IHH)and Kallmann Syndrome (KS)

The purpose of the study is to examine how Kallmann syndrome (KS) and idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (IHH) affect reproductive hormones. These disorders are caused by a defect in...

Letrozole Combined With Gonadotropins (Gn) for Ovarian Stimulation Undergoing in Vitro Fertilization/Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (IVF/ICSI) in Patients With Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

The purpose of this study is to determine whether letrozole combined with gonadotropins are effective in the ovarian hyperstimulating for IVF/ICSI in patients with PCOS.

Leuprolide in Treating Adults With Hypogonadotropism

RATIONALE: Hypogonadotropism is an abnormal condition caused by decreased production of gonadotropins, a group of hormones that stimulate the parts of the reproductive system that produce...

Influence of Male Hormones on Regional Fat Metabolism

The male sex hormone, testosterone, plays an important role in determining body fat distribution in men. This is especially evident in the dramatic shift in body composition as boys and g...

The Kallmann syndrome is a very rare congenital association of gonadotropin-releasing hormone deficiency and hyposmia or anosmia. Clinically it is characterized by low serum concentrations of testoste...

Elevated testosterone in females reveals a robust sex difference in altered androgen levels during chronic alcohol withdrawal.

The endocrine disruption associated with alcohol (ethanol) abuse in both males and females is widely recognized. Ethanol intoxication and withdrawal in males results in significant reductions in andro...
