Prospective Randomized Trial Comparing the New Endovenous Procedures Versus Conventional Surgery for Varicose Veins Due to Great Saphenous Vein Incompetence

14:11 EDT 23rd May 2013 | BioPortfolio

Summary

Through a prospective, multicenter RCT evaluate and compare the three new endovenous methods for great saphenous vein ablation (Radiofrequency, endovenous laser and foam sclerotherapy) versus high ligation and stripping. Procedure (proof-of-concept) and patient related (clinical outcome) factors will be studied.

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Saphenous Vein

The vein which drains the foot and leg.

Keratectomy, Subepithelial, Laser-assisted

A surgical technique to correct REFRACTIVE ERRORS of the EYE, such as MYOPIA and ASTIGMATISM. In this method, a flap of CORNEAL EPITHELIUM is created by exposure of the area to dilute alcohol. The flap is lifted and then replaced after laser ablation of the subepithelial CORNEA.

Angioplasty, Laser

A technique utilizing a laser coupled to a catheter which is used in the dilatation of occluded blood vessels. This includes laser thermal angioplasty where the laser energy heats up a metal tip, and direct laser angioplasty where the laser energy directly ablates the occlusion. One form of the latter approach uses an EXCIMER LASER which creates microscopically precise cuts without thermal injury. When laser angioplasty is performed in combination with balloon angioplasty it is called laser-assisted balloon angioplasty (ANGIOPLASTY, BALLOON, LASER-ASSISTED).

Portal Vein

A short thick vein formed by union of the superior mesenteric vein and the splenic vein.

High-intensity Focused Ultrasound Ablation

The use of focused, high-frequency sound waves to destroy tissue. It is sometimes used in conjunction with but is distinct from INTERVENTIONAL ULTRASONOGRAPHY.
