Testing the Effectiveness of VOICES as Implemented by STD & HIV Prevention Agencies in the US and PR
The purpose of the project is to determine whether the VOICES/VOCES intervention, that was shown to be effective in a research study, is still effective when delivered by STD/HIV prevention agencies. VOICES/VOCES is a brief, single-session intervention for African-American and Latino adult men and women at high risk for STD/HIV. It encourages condom use and improves condom negotiation skills. A health educator delivers the intervention to groups of 4 to 8 clinic patients...
Dutasteride to Treat Women With Menstrually Related Mood Disorders
This study will explore the effects of dutasteride on mood and the stress response across the menstrual cycle. Dutasteride blocks production of neurosteroids-hormones that help regulate the stress response systems. These systems may be disturbed in women with menstrually related mood disorders (MRMD). The effects of the drug will be compared in women with and without MRMD to determine how neurosteroids regulate mood and the stress response across the menstrual cycle. Dutasterid...
A Study of Nonoxynol-9 (N-9) and HIV Infection
The purpose of this study is to see if nonoxynol-9 (N-9) gel used in the vagina can prevent the spread of HIV. Most of the people with HIV in the world today live in southern Africa. Because this population is not likely to use condoms, an HIV-prevention method that women can control is needed. N-9 used in the vagina may help prevent the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.
This study will look at viral and immunologic factors involved in protecting against sexually transmitted HIV infection in couples in which one partner is infected and the other is not. This study will include 50 couples who reside in Rakai, Uganda, and who have been together for at least 2 years. In some couples, both partners will be HIV-infected, in some couples only one partner will have HIV, and in some couples neither partner will have HIV. Participants undergo th...
FEM-PrEP (Truvada®): Study to Assess the Role of Truvada® in Preventing HIV Acquisition in Women
This Phase III, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial will enroll an estimated 3900 HIV-negative women from 7 sites in 5 countries (Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania,South Africa,Zambia and Zimbabwe). The study's purpose is to investigate the safety and effectiveness of a once-daily Truvada® pill (compared with placebo) in preventing HIV among HIV-uninfected women at risk of becoming infected through sexual intercourse. The study population includes HIV-antibody-negative w...
SH T00186 in the Treatment of Primary Dysmenorrhea
The investigational drug SH T00186D is an oral contraceptive. The investigational drug used in this study contains the estrogen ethinylestradiol (EE) and the progestogen drospirenone (DRSP). The aim of the present study is to evaluate efficacy and safety of the investigational drug in the treatment of menstrual pain (pelvic pain occurring shortly before, at onset, during menstruation). Two different regimens of intake of the same investigational product will be compared....
This study will explore the role of oral contraceptive pills in managing uterine bleeding in women who have low blood platelet counts as a result of aplastic anemia. Oral contraceptive pills have been shown to be effective in managing uterine bleeding in healthy women, but the effects have not been thoroughly studied in women who have low platelet counts. The purpose of the study is to determine whether oral contraceptive pills are a useful complement to platelet transfusions i...
The purpose of this trial is to determine whether providing non-contracepting women with gonorrhea or chlamydial infection with advanced provision emergency contraception (APEC) and condoms decreases their risk of becoming pregnant.
Safety and Acceptability Study of the UC-781 Microbicide Gel Applied Rectally
This study is the first to try this product in the rectum of humans. This study is only to find out if the gel is safe for use in the rectum, not to see if the gel works. Information gathered from this study will help investigators decide whether this gel is safe enough to move onto the next phase of studies. Information gathered from this study will also help investigators determine what participants did and did not like about the product and what types of products people mi...
Randomised Controlled Trial of Condoms Plus Additional Lubrication
This RCT compares the clinical and non clinical condom failure rate among condom using heterosexual couples with and without externally applied additional spermicidal lubricant. The hypothesis is that breakage and slippage rates will be reduced.
Effectiveness of HIV Risk Reduction Program Among African American Men
This study will test the effectiveness of a brief clinic-based program designed to promote the correct use of condoms among young African-American men newly diagnosed with a sexually transmitted disease.
HIV-discordant Couple Intrauterine Insemination
The investigators propose to treat couples who wish to have a child in which the man is HIV-positive and the woman is HIV-negative. The investigators call these couples HIV-discordant. On the average, an HIV-positive man, who does not participate in high-risk activities, will transmit HIV to a female partner one in every one thousand acts of intercourse without a condom. To reduce transmission of HIV, HIV-discordant couples are counseled to avoid intercourse altogether, or to...
Family-Based HIV Prevention for Latinos
The proposed project will develop and test an HIV prevention intervention for Latino families. This study will: 1. Conduct a pilot "run-through" of an adapted family-based intervention with three cohorts (about 24 families) to determine the feasibility, acceptability, and appropriateness for the target population. 2. Revise the family-based HIV prevention intervention based on the results of the pilot "run-through" and structured exit interviews....
The objective of this study is to assess the impact of a structured intervention and/or free distribution of condoms during the pre-travel consultation on sexual risk behavior of young persons traveling alone.
Computerized HIV/Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Prevention Program
The purpose of the current study is to test a computerized HIV/STD prevention program with heterosexual African Americans. The hypothesis is that those exposed to the program will increase their correct and consistent use of condoms compared to those not exposed to the program.
HIV Prevention Program for African American Teen Males
The purpose of this study is to test if sexual health interventions can reduce the incidence of STIs among African American teens (15 to 21 years old). By doing this study, we hope to help African American teens improve their condom use skills and encourage them to use condoms more frequently. If the number of STIs in this population can be decreased, the health of African American teen males will greatly improve. We also believe that sexual partners (typically African American...
