Original Source: Hydroxyl group recognition by hydrogen-bonding donor and acceptor sites embedded in a layered metal-organic framework.
One of the dominant types of interactions between host and guest molecules is hydrogen-bonding, and these interactions can work selectively for a guest molecule. Here, we demonstrate a metal-organic framework (MOF) having both hydrogen-bonding donor and acceptor sites that are quite effective for selective sorption. The MOF selectively interacts with hydroxylic guests in contrast to aprotic hydrogen-bonding guests and shows a sorption selectivity for protic H(2)O, MeOH, and EtOH guests. Notably, this is the...

Pathway describes how alpha hydroxyl acids cause skin exfoliation
A team of investigators from UC Davis and Peking University have discovered a mechanism that may explain how alpha hydroxyl acids (AHAs) -- the key ingredient in cosmetic chemical peels and wrinkle-re...
Improving the hydrogen oxidation reaction rate by promotion of hydroxyl adsorption
Hydrogen is an attractive alternative to fossil fuels, but the slow rate of the hydrogen oxidation reaction in alkaline fuel cells hinders their development. Researchers propose that bifunctional mate...
Clearwater, Florida (PRWEB) March 20, 2013 QCI, Florida's go-to source for water damage services, has just announced that it will distribute hydroxyl generators. In response to the trend for ch...

Low-temperature physics: Cool molecules
A sample of the hydroxyl radical has been cooled to a temperature of a few millikelvin. The result opens the door to observing phenomena such as Bose–Einstein condensation of molecules in their grou...
Researchers Identify Cellular Basis for How Anti-aging Cosmetics Work
A team of investigators fhave discovered a mechanism that may explain how alpha hydroxyl acids (AHAs) ― the key ingredient in cosmetic chemical peels and wrinkle-reducing creams ― work to enhance...
A new atmospherically relevant oxidant of sulphur dioxide
Atmospheric oxidation is a key phenomenon that connects atmospheric chemistry with globally challenging environmental issues, such as climate change, stratospheric ozone loss, acidification of soils a...
Evaporative cooling of the dipolar hydroxyl radical
Atomic physics was revolutionized by the development of forced evaporative cooling, which led directly to the observation of Bose–Einstein condensation, quantum-degenerate Fermi gases and ultracold...

Modeling of hydrogen and hydroxyl group migration on graphene.
Density functional calculations of optimized geometries for the migration of single hydrogen and hydroxyl groups on graphene are performed. It is shown that the migration energy barrier for the hydrox...
Revisiting the reaction of hydroxyl radicals with vicinal diols in water.
The carbonyl products of the reactions of hydroxyl radicals with three vicinal diols (ethane-1,2-diol, propane-1,2-diol and butane-2,3-diol) have been identified and quantified. Hydroxyl radicals were...
Intrinsic contribution of the 2'-hydroxyl to RNA conformational heterogeneity.
Canonical duplex RNA assumes only the A-form conformation at the secondary structure level while, in contrast, a wide range of noncanonical, tertiary conformations of RNA occur. Here, we show how the...
The reactions of a range of chiral resorcinol monophosphite ligands with [PdCl(2)(NCMe)(2)] was investigated in order to establish whether the meta-hydroxyl function was involved in the orthometallati...
