Researchers explain the crucial role of piriform cortex in distinguishing similar odors

Can you tell the smell of a rose from the scent of a lilac? If so, you have your brain's piriform cortex to thank.

Waking up is hard to do: Prefrontal cortex implicated in consciousness

Researchers discover that stimulating the prefrontal cortex can induce wake-like behavior in anesthetized rats.

Movement Control: How Our Brain Responds to Unexpected Situations

NewsIn mammals, movement is controlled by circuits spanning throughout the central nervous system from the cortex to the spinal cord. The role of motor cortex in the control of movement is still uncle...

Study: Motor cortex necessary for movement control in response to unexpected situations

Scientists have demonstrated that the motor cortex is necessary for the execution of corrective movements in response to unexpected changes of sensory input but not when the same movements are execute...

Reorganization of brain outputs in deaf cats

Cats deaf from an early age have increased outgoing connections from the auditory cortex to a midbrain region responsible for directing the animal to a particular location in its environment. The stud...

Sodium and potassium conductances in principal neurons of the mouse piriform cortex: A quantitative description.

The primary olfactory (or piriform) cortex is a promising model system for understanding how the cerebral cortex processes sensory information, but study of the piriform cortex is hindered by a lack o...

Increased functional connectivity of the posterior cingulate cortex with the lateral orbitofrontal cortex in depression.

To analyze the functioning of the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) in depression, we performed the first fully voxel-level resting state functional-connectivity neuroimaging analysis of depression of ...

Effects of Arousal on Mouse Sensory Cortex Depend on Modality.

Changes in arousal modulate the activity of mouse sensory cortex, but studies in different mice and different sensory areas disagree on whether this modulation enhances or suppresses activity. We meas...
