Dharmacon, Inc. Company Profile

02:13 EST 19th December 2018 | BioPortfolio

Dharmacon Research, Inc. was founded in 1995 by Stephen Scaringe to develop and commercialize a new technology for RNA oligonucleotide synthesis. This new chemistry was invented and developed by Scaringe under the direction of Professor Marvin Caruthers at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Drs. Caruthers and Scaringe saw the unmet needs of biology researchers and the biotech industry for reliable and high-quality chemically synthesized RNA, and envisioned that a novel RNA chemistry was necessary to fulfill this need. From 1991-1995, they developed a new chemical strategy for synthesizing RNA, now referred to as 5'-silyl-2'-orthoester or 2'-ACE RNA chemistry. The further development and ultimate commercialization of this innovative RNA technology was the impetus for founding Dharmacon Research.

In November of 2002, Dharmacon Research, Inc. officially changed its name to Dharmacon, Inc., to reflect the increasing capabilities and future growth potential of the company, as it had advanced beyond research and development and into whole solutions for RNA oligo-dependent applications and technologies. In March of 2004, Dharmacon became a wholly owned subsidiary of Fisher Scientific International, Inc., joining other leading companies such as Pierce, Endogen, Oxoid, and HyClone in becoming part of the Fisher Scientific team.

Dharmacon is located in Lafayette, Colorado, 40 minutes northwest of Denver International Airport and 15 minutes east of Boulder, Colorado.
