ECRI originated in 1955 as the Graduate Pain Research Foundation and was engaged in neurological studies. In 1968, its name was changed to the Emergency Care Research Institute, and it focused on research in emergency medicine, resuscitation, and related biomedical engineering studies. As the Emergency Care Research Institute broadened its work beyond emergency care, it adopted the acronym ECRI, which has been in use since the early 1970s
