Founded in 1970, the Friedrich Miescher Institute is devoted to fundamental biomedical research. We employ new technologies to explore basic molecular mechanisms of cells and organisms in health and disease.
Our current research focuses on the fields of epigenetics, growth control and neurobiology. The FMI is an internationally recognised research centre that has initiated key developments in molecular biology over the years.
We also provide young scientists from all over the world with an opportunity to participate in scientific research. As a lively educational establishment we have trained hundreds of young scientists at the post-
graduate and postdoctoral levels. The FMI is supported by the Novartis Research Foundation as well as by grants from national and international agencies. We have a total staff of 250. In addition to the 22 research
group leaders and a core of technicians and support staff, we are home to 90 PhD students and 75 postdoctoral fellows from almost 40 different countries. Our day-to-day working language is English. Basel is a major centre for research in biology, with outstanding academic institutions and leading life science companies. The city is also rich in culture, with a unique cosmopolitan flare.
