Murdoch Childrens Research Institute Company Profile

Almost daily we hear or read stories relating to the marvels of genetics and molecular biology. Potentially great advances such as the diagnosis and treatment of human diseases, development of specialised organisms for cleaning up oil spills or growing more nutritious food attract praise and applause from the general public. But all too often these potential benefits of genetic technology are overlooked as people envisage and discuss the more controversial uses of this brave new area of science. ‘Frankenstein Foods’ and ‘Designer Babies’ are headlines that inspire fear in our community, one that is now more sceptical of the great advances that modern science can deliver.

The challenge is how to derive the most benefit but limit the potential abuse of this technology. The ethical limitations of genetic technology need to be debated and decided by our community as a whole, not left to select groups of academics and politicians. The MCRI and GTAC's education program aims to enhance the knowledge of ALL members of our society so that they can participate in an informed debate on the issues that will arise. Many of our programs centre around a theme of ethics and provide a forum for participants to voice their opinions on controversial topics.
