Gene Network Sciences (GNS) is a privately held biosimulation company with offices in Ithaca, New York, and Cambridge, Massachusetts. Founded in 2000, GNS creates data-driven compound simulation models that help pharmaceutical companies improve the quality of their drug candidates. Leading the company's multi-disciplinary approach are scientists specializing in molecular biology, computer science, mathematics, genetics, chemical engineering and physics.
Makers of drugs face daunting odds -- approvals have plummeted to new lows, while cost and development times for drugs that make it to market have skyrocketed to an average of more than $800 million and 12 years. More than 80 percent of all new drugs tested in human clinical trials fail. Only eight percent of drugs coming into phase one development make it to market, and only about half of drugs in phase two are successful. Once in the market, medications deliver therapeutic benefits to only an average of 60 percent of patients.
