The Society for the Internet in Medicine was formed at MedNet 96. The purpose of the Society is to promote the education worldwide of the public and medical communities in the application of Internet and related technologies in the fields of medical sciences, healthcare practice and healthcare management.
The main activity of the Society to date continues to be the organisation of the annual World Congress on the Internet in Medicine (see MedNet).

However, the Society has also been active in creating a folio of services both for its members and the wider public. Initially it produced a web-based publication called the SIM Quarterly, which carried a range of material including news items, editorial, short papers, correspondence and technical tutorials, which may still be found in the Archive section. Many of these activities are now covered by the Journal of Medical Informatics Research JMIR, which is the official journal of SIM. The Society's web pages also contain news and useful information including a guide to searching the Internet for medical information aimed at newcomers to the field. The Society's international focus includes close links with the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA), the European Federation for Medical Informatics (EFMI) and the Health on the Net Foundation (HON).
