Institutionen för laboratoriemedicin bildades 2003 genom sammanslagning av Institutionen för medicinsk laboratorievetenskap och teknik och Institutionen för mikrobiologi, patologi och immunologi. Institutionen består i dag av 11 avdelningar och representerar laboratoriemedicinen i vid bemärkelse. Vid institutionen arbetar ca 350 personer, varav ungefär hälften är doktorander.
Institutionens kompetensområden inom cellbiologi, laboratoriemedicin, fysiologi och teknik är mycket efterfrågade inom grund- och vidareutbildning. Institutionen är en av KIs största undervisningsinstitutioner - engagerad i 11 av institutets 19 grundutbildningsprogram och omfattar mer än 500 studenthelårsplatser. Vid institutionen anordnas dessutom ett stort antal fristående kurser och uppdragsutbildningar. Institutionen har ett nära samarbete med Södertörns högskola inom dess naturvetenskapliga program och med KTH.
