In 1920, Lexington Clinic began its commitment of providing quality health care services to Central Kentucky. The idea of forming a clinic for group practice had been a dream of two doctors, David Barrow, M.D., and Waller O. Bullock, M.D. They, together with seven other physicians, formed a partnership patterned after the Mayo Clinic, and on July 1, 1920, Lexington Clinic opened its doors at Second and Upper Streets.Dr. Charles C. Garr, one of the nine founders of Lexington Clinic, wrote, "It was a difficult proposition to organize a clinic with these men who had no experience whatever in clinic practice. It was only through a will to win, cooperation, and confidence in each other that success was attained. These nine men had been in private practice for a varying number of years. It was difficult for most of us to abandon our former ways in the practice of medicine and surgery and try to conform to the best interests of the group."

The contributions of the Clinic's founders and early partners made them pioneers in many fields of health care. Dr. Elmer S. Maxwell, who joined the Clinic on October 1, 1920, was the first pathologist in Lexington. He founded the Lexington Clinic laboratory, which was made available to all Lexington physicians. He also assumed responsibility for the clinical laboratories in both Saint Joseph and Good Samaritan (currently - Samaritan) Hospitals. In cooperation with the University of Kentucky, Lexington Clinic, through Dr. Maxwell, established a school for medical technologists, culminating in a BS degree.

In 1925, Dr. Donnan Harding joined the Lexington Clinic staff. He was the first trained radiologist in Lexington and was a pioneer in both diagnostic and therapeutic X-ray. Dr. Harding established the first radiology department in Lexington, providing X-ray coverage not only for Lexington Clinic, but for Saint Joseph and Good Samaritan Hospitals as well.
