Lakemedelsindustriforeningen,LIFThe Swedish Association of the Pharmaceutical Industry Company Profile

The Swedish Association of the Pharmaceutical Industry (LIF) is the trade association for the research based pharmaceutical industry in Sweden. LIF has about 60 member companies which represent approximately 80 percent of the total sales of pharmaceuticals in Sweden. "Medicines are vital for life. They provide a road to improved health. LIF's objective is to create favourable conditions and possibilities for medical research and the development of new medicines. Acting in the best interest LIF shall work to enhance an understanding and awareness of modern medicines contribution to human health and quality of life."
LIF's activities are lead by it's Board. Chairman of the Board is Steinar Høeg, AstraZeneca Sverige AB. An important part of the work within LIF is done in the committees appointed by the Board. The office of LIF has 35 employees and the Managing Director is Richard Bergström. LIF has also one subsidiary; Läkemedelsstatistik AB.
LIF's members have about 19,000 employees in Sweden. The members invest close to 11 billion SEK in R&D (2002) in Sweden. Exports of pharmaceuticals from Sweden exceeded 40 billion SEK the same year. During the same period imports to Sweden of pharmaceuticals amounted to 13 billion SEK, thereby creating a trade surplus exceeding 27 billion SEK.
LIF represents their members on joint issues, maintains continous contacts with organisations and decision-makers vital to the industry and creates an understanding of the significance of the pharmaceutical industry for an efficient and modern medical care. LIF is also a service organisation for the members and continously informs them of developments in fields which can influence the work conditions for their operations in Sweden.
The activity of LIF does not include collective agreements. According to current competition law LIF's business activities are not allowed to lead to competitive restrictive measures.
