Mary Crowley was born in 1915. Her mother died when she was eighteen months old and at that age Crowley was sent to live with her grandparents on a wheat farm in Missouri for five years. She lived with her father and stepmother for several years until her stepmother was declared unfit, and she was sent to live with her grandparents again. Years later, divorced and with two children to support, Crowley got a job in Dallas, Texas and attended Southern Methodist University at night. She worked in sales at Stanley Home Products and for a home accessories importer’s firm before Home Interiors and Gifts, a company she had long entertained opening, was incorporated, in 1957. It became a multi-million dollar corporation. Crowley counseled and trained thousands of women across the nation. She served on many boards, including the American Cancer Society and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. She was the first woman to serve on the Dallas Chamber of Commerce.
