The Institute for Genomic Research Company Profile

01:06 EDT 20th September 2018 | BioPortfolio

TIGR has grown from a small but dedicated group of scientists working in a modest laboratory to an internationally known research institute, more than 300 staffers strong, on a beautiful 18-acre campus in Rockville. The Institute began in 1992 with a compelling vision: jump-starting the genomics revolution. Its researchers succeeded in doing just that, with a winning combination of stellar scientists, a multidisciplinary team approach, and the latest computing and sequencing technologies.
In an article about the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the structure of DNA, The New York Times said the genome era began with the announcement in May 25, 1995, that TIGR scientists had decoded the first genome of a single-celled organism, a bacterium known as Haemophilus influenzae. It was the first time the entire genome of a free-living organism (in contrast to a virus that must rely on its host to survive) had been deciphered.
Since that landmark publication in Science, TIGR has helped set the pace for genomics laboratories around the world, exerting a profound impact as a catalyst for innovation. In its early days, TIGR – which was established through a grant from HealthCare Investment Corporation, Inc. – focused much of its research on identifying expressed human genes to help pinpoint the genetic components of diseases. With its work on those Expressed Sequence Tags, known as ESTs, the Institute helped inaugurate the era of molecular medicine.
