Somanetics Corporation is a publicly-traded (Nasdaq: SMTS) medical device business located in Troy, Michigan. Somanetics develops, manufactures and markets the INVOS® Cerebral Oximeter, which occupies a unique position in U.S. hospitals as the only noninvasive patient monitoring system commercially available in the U.S. that continuously monitors changes in the blood oxygen levels in the brain. A real-time guide to therapeutic intervention, using information provided by the INVOS System has been shown in clinical research to improve patient outcomes and reduce the cost of care. Somanetics also has developed and markets the CorRestore® System for use in cardiac repair and reconstruction, including a procedure called Surgical Ventricular Restoration, or SVR, for the treatment of certain patients with congestive heart failure. Somanetics has 50 employees. It markets its INVOS System in the U.S. through a direct sales and education team, supplemented by independent representative firms in select markets. Outside the US, Edwards Lifesciences represents the INVOS System products in Japan and Tyco Healthcare markets the INVOS products in Europe, Canada, the Middle East and Africa. Somanetics has a solid base of intellectual property, including 12 U.S. patents and three foreign patents related to the INVOS System, and a strong foundation of clinical research.
