The Swiss National Science Foundation - in the Service of Scientific Research With its a federal mandate, the SNSF is Switzerland’s foremost institution in the promotion of scientific research. It supports research in all disciplines, from philosophy and biology to the nanosciences and medicine.Established in 1952 as a foundation under private law, it has the autonomy it needs to promote independent scientific research.The SNSF funds research which leads to new knowledge. It also promotes application oriented-research in various scientific fields. The main task of the SNSF is to evaluate the quality of research proposals submitted by scientists and to provide funding on the basis of priorities and available financial resources.The SNSF funds more than 7000 researchers every year, 5000 or more of whom are 35 years old or younger. It has several ways of promoting research, foremost among them the funding of proposals submitted by Swiss-based scientists (Project Funding) for competitive evaluation. By supporting investigator-driven research, the SNSF encourages the development of innovative ideas, thus promoting high-quality research in emerging fields.In its fellowships and grants activities (Funding of Individual Scientists), the SNSF promotes promising young scientists by providing financial support during the stage of their career between doctoral thesis and assistant professorship.
