Synthes (USA) was formed in 1974 and began marketing the AO/ASIF system the following year. Since the company began operation in 1975, it has grown from a small distributor to the leading skeletal fixation company in North America. Synthes (USA) provides instruments and implants to many U.S. hospitals, including almost all medical school residency training facilities. The company has committed significant resources to assist medical schools and the AO Foundation in conducting the most comprehensive post-graduate training programs available for the orthopaedic surgeon. With emphasis on practical work in a laboratory setting, these courses enable the surgeon to learn how to use the instruments and implants, and to learn and practice the various surgical techniques.
