The Swedish Research Council has a national responsibility to support and develop basic research in all disciplines. The goal is for Sweden to be a leading nation in scientific research.The Research Council includes three Scientific Councils — for Humanities and Social Sciences, Medicine, and Natural and Engineering Sciences — and two Committees, for Educational Science and Research Infrastructures.

The Research Council is a government agency under the Ministry of Education, Research and Culture.

The Research Council collaborates with numerous agencies and organisations that provide research funding in Sweden and abroad.
