In December 1950, the San Diego Blood Bank (SDBB) was established through the support of the San Diego County Medical Society. SDBB’s mission is to provide the highest quality blood transfusion products and reference laboratory services to hospital partners throughout Southern California. We intend to further ensure the health of our community by simultaneously delivering health and wellness education and services and extending our capabilities into academic research, pre-clinical, clinical studies, and manufacturing for biotech and pharmaceutical companies. Our highly trained staff of nurses, medical technologists and quality assurance teams, and our highly accredited laboratory dictated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP), Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), and the European Union (EU) regulatory requirements collects and processes blood from over 10,000 donors a month. The SDBB also has a Cell Therapy Laboratory that includes cord blood collection, processing and storage, and is soon to be expanded to include additional services. As a founding member of the National Blood Collaborative, the SDBB has access to donors, blood, and blood components across the U.S. For more information about the SDBB, please visit www.sandiegobloodbank.org.
