A kidney transplant is an operation that places a healthy kidney in your body which takes over the work of the two kidneys that have failed. The patient will no longer need dialysis. The new kidney is placed in the lower abdomen and connected to the artery and vein in a similar location to the original kidney. The new kidney will typically start making urine as soon as blood starts flowing through it, but in some situations a few days to a week may be required.
