Effect of Targeting Mean Arterial Pressure During Cardiopulmonary Bypass by Monitoring Cerebral Autoregulation on Postsurgical Delirium Among Older Patients: A Nested Randomized Clinical Trial.

Delirium occurs in up to 52% of patients after cardiac surgery and may result from changes in cerebral perfusion. Using intraoperative cerebral autoregulation monitoring to individualize and optimize cerebral perfusion may be a useful strategy to reduce the incidence of delirium after cardiac surgery.

Prevention of Venous Thromboembolism in Colorectal Surgery With Enoxaparin: Are We Using the Right Dose?

Assessment of Anti-Factor Xa Levels of Patients Undergoing Colorectal Surgery Given Once-Daily Enoxaparin Prophylaxis: A Clinical Study Examining Enoxaparin Pharmacokinetics.

Between 4% and 12% of patients undergoing colorectal surgery and receiving enoxaparin, 40 mg per day, have a postoperative VTE event. An improved understanding of why "breakthrough" VTE events occur despite guideline-compliant prophylaxis is an important patient safety question.

Plant traits moderate pollen limitation of introduced and native plants: a phylogenetic meta-analysis of global scale.

•The role of pollination in the success of invasive plants needs to be understood because invasives have substantial effects on species interactions and ecosystem functions. Previous research has shown both that reproduction of invasive plants is often pollen limited and that invasive plants can have high seed production motivating the questions: how do invasive populations maintain reproductive...

A nationwide survey of fetal myelomeningocele in Japan: Backgrounds for fetal surgery.

Fetal surgery for myelomeningocele (MMC) has yet not been performed in Japan, and the clinical backgrounds of fetal MMC in Japan remain poorly described. We examined the prenatal characteristics and perinatal outcomes of fetal MMC to prepare for the introduction of fetal surgery.

Urgent robotic mesocolic excision for obstructing proximal transverse colon cancer - a video vignette.

Although the data on minimally invasive right hemicolectomy in an elective setting have progressively been increasing, minimally invasive approaches are seldom preferred in a non-elective setting (1). As would be expected, a minimally invasive approach to an obstructing colon cancer can be challenging because of the limited working space in the abdomen. For patients with an obstructing right or tr...

Simultaneous radiofrequency ablation combined with laparoscopic splenectomy: a safe and effective way for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma complicated with cirrhosis and hypersplenism.

This study aimed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of simultaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) combined with laparoscopic splenectomy (Lap-Sp) for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) complicated with cirrhosis and hypersplenism. Between January 2013 and June 2014, 42 patients with primary HCC complicated with cirrhosis and hypersplenism who underwent simultaneous RFA combined wi...

Laparoscopic surgery in rectal cancer patients taking anti-thrombotic therapy.

Several previous studies have shown that laparoscopic resection of rectal cancer is a feasible option. However, its safety and efficacy in patients receiving long-term anti-thrombotic therapy (AT) remain unclear. We retrospectively reviewed 364 patients who underwent elective resection for rectal cancer via a laparoscopic approach between 2007 and 2018 in our institute. Patients were classified a...

Outcomes of radiotherapy in advanced external auditory canal cancer.

External auditory canal cancer (EACC) is a rare malignant tumor. In the present study, we retrospectively evaluated the treatment results in patients with advanced EACC who were treated using external-beam radiotherapy (EBRT) combined with chemotherapy or radical surgery. Overall, 21 patients with Stage III (n = 8) or Stage IV (n = 13) EACC who underwent initial treatment at our hospital between 2...

Five-Year Outcomes of Gastric Bypass in Adolescents as Compared with Adults.

Bariatric surgery results in weight loss and health improvements in adults and adolescents. However, whether outcomes differ according to the age of the patient at the time of surgery is unclear.

Frequency of Secondary Dislocations of Initially non Displaced and Minimally Displaced Fractures of the Lateral Humeral Condyle in Children - Surveillance of a Treatment Algorithm.

The treatment of undisplaced fractures of the lateral humeral condyle is conservative. However, it is problematic that it is not possible to differentiate between a stable and an unstable, non-displaced fracture. A pragmatic approach is to X-ray the elbow without a cast 5 days after trauma and to compare those images with the initial ones. If there is a central increase of dislocation, then there ...

Scientific Backgrounds for the Timing of Acute Care Surgery.

The correct timing of urgent surgery in the field of orthopedic and trauma surgery is under constant discussion. The authors of this review like to present a scientific based recommendation for the timing of acute care surgery using the TACS-classification for the description of urgency. The timing and priority of the indicated procedure is deduced only from the expected mortality and disability c...

Prevalence of Carotid Stenosis and Incidence of Ischemic Stroke in Patients Undergoing Non-Coronary Cardiac Surgery.

Many publications on coronary surgery and carotid stenosis (CS) can be found, but we do not have enough information about the relationship between ischemic stroke, CS and non-coronary cardiac surgery.

Early Stage of Atherosclerosis in Aortocoronary Saphenous Vein Grafts: Intravascular Ultrasound Study.

Angiographically visible plaques in patent vein grafts are usually detected years after surgery. Our aim was to examine early plaque formation in vein grafts.

Does CHADS-VASc Score Predict MACE in Patients Undergoing Isolated Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting Surgery?

To evaluate the prognostic value of CHA2DS2-VASc score in individuals undergoing isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery.

PEGylated (NH)WO nanorod mediated rapid photonecrosis of breast cancer cells.

Photothermal therapy has emerged as a potential minimally invasive technique to destroy malignant cells with high selectivity. It utilizes low band gap nanoscale materials as photothermal agents dispersed at the affected area to increase the temperature locally by absorbing radiation in the near infrared (NIR) region and destroys the cells. In an effort to develop a photothermal agent with high ef...
