TORONTO, ONTARIO and VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwired) -- 06/05/15 -- Attention Business & Healthcare Editors
LifeLabs Medical Laboratory Services ("LifeLabs") today joined the Federal Department of State (Science and Technology), Genome Canada and the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre to announce the partnership between LifeLabs and the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre to establish a national database of genomic profiles of various cancers.
By establishing a genomic profile database, healthcare providers will have access to information that will allow them to offer the right drug at the right time to cancer patients, improving cancer treatment outcomes for Canadians coast to coast and achieving substantial cost-savings in the healthcare system for multiple cancer types.
"Genetics is revolutionizing 21st century healthcare and LifeLabs is committed to making clinically relevant genetic testing more accessible to Canadians," said Sue Paish, LifeLabs' President and CEO. "With our partnership with the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and the University Health Network together we will help transform cancer treatment in Canada. We are grateful to Genome Canada and the Federal Government for their support for innovation and research in genomics through the Genomic Applications Partnership Program. We are also honoured to be partnering with such esteemed organizations as Princess Margaret and UHN."
Through collaborations with recognized and knowledgeable partners across academic, research and delivery sectors and with the development of a new purpose-built state-of-the-art genetic testing laboratory, LifeLabs offers a comprehensive menu of genetic tests focused on cancer, non-invasive prenatal testing, rare inherited conditions, and pharmacogenomics.
"As this new era of personalized medicine evolves, LifeLabs is thrilled to be partnering again with the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre," said Jeff Sumner, LifeLabs' Senior Vice-President, Business Development, Clinical Affairs and Genetics. "Our strengths in efficient laboratory operations, specimen collection, transportation and extensive logistics capabilities and rapidly growing genetic testing capabilities, combined with the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre's expertise as Canada's leading developer of novel cancer genomic assays, will bring a comprehensive cancer genomics strategy to Canada."
