NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas, Aug. 9, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Advantage Eyecare announced that optometrist Dr. Dung Nguyen joined the North Richland eye practice in May. Dr. Nguyen received his O.D. degree in 2013 from the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico following his Biological Sciences degree from the University of North Texas. Dr. Nguyen has previously worked as an ophthalmic technician, optician and vision lab tech. He is also a certified optometric glaucoma specialist. At Advantage Eyecare, Dr. Nguyen will provide vision exams for prescription contact lenses and eyeglasses and assist with the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma and cataracts.
North Richland optometrists Dr. Mark Schwartz and Dr. Arlene Schwartz welcomed a new member to the Advantage Eyecare team earlier this year. Dr. Dung Nguyen has joined the eye care center to further the practice's mission of providing quality care using the latest technology.
"We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Nguyen to our practice," said Dr. Mark Schwartz. "Dr. Nguyen is experienced in both standard vision exams and more complex eye care services, including the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma. As a certified glaucoma specialist, he brings an enhanced level of specialized service to our practice that will no doubt benefit many of our patients."
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that cause vision loss by damaging the eye's optic nerve. Without early diagnosis and treatment, many patients with glaucoma will ultimately lose their vision and go blind. While there is no cure for glaucoma, Dr. Nguyen emphasized that the earlier this condition is diagnosed, the more eye doctors can do to help patients.
Glaucoma is detected through a comprehensive dilated eye exam, visual acuity test and visual field test.
"A glaucoma diagnosis can be very scary for patients," said Dr. Nguyen. "There is no cure for glaucoma and vision lost from the disease cannot be restored. The good news, however, is that early treatment can help reduce the risk for vision loss and slow the disease's progression. As a certified optometric glaucoma specialist, I'm committed to educating patients about the warning signs for this disease and helping them take the necessary steps to treat these conditions before significant vision loss occurs."
Dr. Nguyen also offers standard vision exams for prescription eye glasses and contact lenses. This includes helping patients who are not good candidates for standard contacts and may need hard-to-fit contacts.
"Patients with astigmatism, dry eyes, and other conditions like presbyopia are not good candidates for traditional contact lenses," said Dr. Nguyen. "However, that does not mean they can never wear contacts. We simply need to work with these patients to select the right type of contact for their vision needs. My goal is to help every patient feel comfortable and confident while wearing glasses or contacts."
Advantage Eyecare offers hard-to-find contacts, vision exams, sports glasses, sunglasses and cataract/glaucoma screening.
