US and Philippine warships on Saturday conducted a joint patrol of southern waters known as a hunting ground for local Muslim militants, amid rising concern over Islamic militancy and piracy in the region. U.S. Navy combat ship USS Coronado and the Philippine frigate BRP Ramon Alcaraz carried out their joint patrol of the Sulu Sea, a body of water off the southern Philippines where militant groups have carried out kidnappings, a US embassy statement said. "These patrols enhance regional peace and stability," the US naval commander, Rear Admiral Don Gabrielson said, according to the statement.
