GREENSBORO, N.C., Aug. 8, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- According to the 2017-2018 U.S. News & World Report, less than 2 percent of hospitals rated by U.S. News & World Report are ranked "High Performing" in the nine procedures and conditions that are commonly treated in a hospital. Moses H. Cone Hospital was one of them. Annie Penn Hospital, Moses Cone Hospital and Wesley Long Hospital are listed on the U.S. News & World Report website under "Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital."

The ratings evaluate more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide. The hospitals were also rated high performing last year in what's called the, "Common Adult Procedure and Condition Ratings."

"Our patients never think of their heart procedure or knee surgery as common. Our care teams don't either," says Cone Health Chief Medical Officer Bruce Swords, MD, PhD. "Whether you are visiting your primary physician, your specialist, undergoing surgery or participating in therapy, our approach is that everyone is unique. And this recognition again shows that people in our communities get truly exceptional care without leaving town."

U.S. News evaluated hospitals in these common procedures and medical conditions:

  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm repair
  • Aortic valve surgery
  • Heart bypass surgery
  • Heart failure
  • Colon cancer surgery
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • Hip replacement
  • Knee replacement

"For nearly three decades, we've strived to make hospital quality more transparent to health care consumers nationwide," said Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News. "By providing the most comprehensive data available, we hope to give patients the information they need to find the best care across a range of specialties."

The U.S. News ratings are based on several metrics including: risk-adjusted survival and readmission rates, volume, patient experience, patient safety, quality of nursing care and other care-related indicators.

The Best Hospitals procedure and condition ratings rely on Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services data for patients 65 and older, as well as survey data from the American Hospital Association and clinical registry data from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.

Also, Annie Penn Hospital, Moses Cone Hospital and Wesley Long Hospital are collectively ranked as the sixth best hospital in the state. In this list, the hospitals are rated "High Performing" in treating the most challenging conditions in gastroenterology and GI surgery, and pulmonology.
