Study: Patients with ankylosing spondylitis at greater odds for complications after THA

Compared with controls, patients with ankylosing spondylitis had greater odds for complications after total hip arthroplasty, according to results of a recently published study.“Although [total hip arthroplasty] THA remains the gold standard for treatment of end-stage degenerative disease of the hip, there remain non-trivial rates of complications,” the researchers wrote. “Accordingly, it is important to identify the potential risk factors, eliminate or reduce the effects of modifiable risk factors, and include unmodifiable risks into the decision of when and whether to operate.”
