Stopcocks are used to control the flow of fluid into the IV set and are frequently manipulated by hospital staff. Continuous manipulation exposes stopcocks to a variety of microorganisms, raising the probability of colonization. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), stopcocks are often contaminated. Contamination is problematic as the open hub of traditional stopcocks provides a port of entry for microorganisms into the IV set.

As a result, contaminated stopcocks account for a non-trivial share of total catheter-related blood stream infections (CRBSIs). Hospitals seeking to limit costly CRBSIs are eager to adopt competitively priced products that will reduce the frequency of colonization. Antimicrobial materials, closed ports and other colonization-preventing features have been implemented in some products to reduce the probability of CRBSI. However, there is room for firms to expand their current contamination resistant stopcock portfolios to include a broader range of configurations.

This analysis excludes manifolds, ramps, needle-free stopcocks, 2-way stopcocks and 4-way stopcocks. Only standard standalone 3-way stopcocks are included.
