Houston’s Second Annual Amputation Prevention Summit Scheduled for February 24

03:00 EST 15 Feb 2018 | PR Web

Event will highlight the urgent nature of the diabetes epidemic as the leading cause of non-traumatic lower extremity amputations and discuss ways to reduce these amputations.

HOUSTON (PRWEB) February 15, 2018

The Second Annual Amputation Prevention Summit will be held February 24, 2018 at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center, 921 Gessner Road, Houston, TX 77024. Memorial Hermann, the only health system in the Houston area that is part of the Amputation Prevention Centers of America® network, is hosting the summit.

This CME event aims to highlight the urgent nature of the diabetes epidemic, the prevalence of peripheral arterial disease and diabetic foot ulcers and how healthcare professionals can change and improve their practice in order to reduce lower extremity amputations.

Diabetes is among the top 10 leading causes of death in Texas and the leading cause of non-traumatic lower extremity amputation. The risk of leg amputation for people with diabetes is 15 to 40 times greater than for a person without diabetes. Within two to four years of unilateral limb loss, one-third of all patients lose the other leg. Sadly, only about 50 percent of amputees survive within five years following a leg amputation due to ongoing complications of the chronic disease.

This year’s summit will be led by Dr. Desmond Bell, Founder and President of Save a Leg, Save a Life Foundation. Summit speakers will include Dr. Dean Chauvin, Medical Director of the Amputation Prevention Center® at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center and Dr. Kourosh Keyhani, Medical Director of the Amputation Prevention Center® at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital, as well as other speakers across multiple disciplines, including interventional radiology, plastic surgery, infectious disease, vascular surgery, podiatry and others.
