Pigment Epithelium Derived Factor: Characterization, Genomic Organization and Sequence of PEDF Gene

Retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells secrete a unique 50 kD protein. This protein, pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF), contains trophic activity in both the induction of neuronal cell differentiation as well as the survival of the mature neuron. This invention provides the complete genomic sequence of PEDF. It also discloses a truncated version of PEDF referred to as rPEDF, equivalent proteins, vectors comprising the nucleic acids, host cells into which the vectors have been introduced as well as a recombinant method for producing PEDF.
