On Sept 17, 2019, WHO and its member countries will mark the first World Patient Safety Day. Patient safety has finally been recognised as a top global health priority, but much more work needs to be done to eliminate patient harm. Adverse events due to unsafe health care are among the leading causes of death and disability worldwide1 and exacerbate health inequalities since people in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) are more likely to suffer patient harm than those in high-income countries.
