The family-friendly 5K walk is one of the largest in Georgia, with 10,000 participants, and will be held on Saturday, October 19 at Centennial Olympic Park. In the past decade, the event has raised more than $15 million for research to accelerate life-changing scientific breakthroughs in preventing, treating and curing type 1 diabetes (T1D). More than 40,000 people in the U.S. are annually diagnosed with T1D and less than one-third achieve target blood glucose levels, putting them at risk for health complications.
“We are excited to sponsor such a meaningful walk that benefits so many in our community and across the state,” said Chase Moses, president of The Aliera Companies. “JDRF is widely respected for their support of groundbreaking innovation and tireless efforts to help cure type 1 diabetes. We hope our participation helps them achieve their mission to eliminate this debilitating illness.”
T1D is an autoimmune disease that occurs when a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables the human body to convert food into energy it needs to function. It occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. While its causes are not entirely understood, scientists believe genetic factors and environmental triggers are involved, and its onset often has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle.
“Each year, more than 1,000 Georgians are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes – both children and adults,” explains Sara Orrell, executive director JDRF Georgia Chapter. “We are thankful for the metro Atlanta community, our volunteers, donors and local sponsors for their continued support. Every participant and supporter of the JDRF One Walk helps us fund critical research that can lead to scientific breakthroughs and ultimately a cure.”
To date, JDRF has funded more than $2 billion in research, including studies at Georgia Tech and Emory University.
