Protein measurements in venous plasma, earlobe capillary plasma and in plasma stored on filter paper.

In this study, levels of inflammatory protein biomarkers in venous plasma, plasma derived from capillary blood from the earlobe, and capillary plasma stored as dried plasma spots (DPS) were compared. ...

Preanalytical stability of -2proPSA in whole blood stored at room temperature before separation of serum and plasma: implications to Phi determination.

Background [-2]proPSA seems to outperform free/total prostate-specific antigen (PSA) ratio in prostate cancer diagnosis. However, [-2]proPSA stability remains an underestimated issue. We examined [-2]...

Serum or plasma, what is the difference? Investigations to facilitate the sample material selection decision making process for metabolomics studies and beyond.

In analytical chemistry serum as well as plasma are recommended as sample material of choice. However, blood processing for the generation of serum or plasma is rather different. Whether plasma or ser...

A novel approach to stabilize fetal cell-free DNA fraction in maternal blood samples for extended period of time.

This study was undertaken to evaluate a novel method for stabilizing and preserving the original proportion of cell-free fetal DNA (cffDNA) in maternal blood for extended periods of time without using...

Effect of Repeated Freeze-Thaw on Serum Biomarkers Associated with Eye Disease.

BACKGROUND Serum biomarkers are associated with eye diseases, which results in the need for cryopreservation of serum samples. However, the effect on serum biomarker levels of repeatedly freezing and ...

Proteomics Research of Breast Cancer Markers in Interstitial Fluid and Serum

The current study is a case control study involving comparisons of tissue interstitial fluid from breast cancer and adjacent non-cancerous tissue as well as that from benign breast lesion ...

Collection of Plasma and Serum Samples From Individuals Initiating Sofosbuvir for Chronic Hepatitis C for Testing

This non-interventional clinical study will be conducted to prospectively collect serial plasma and serum samples from treatment naïve subjects with chronic HCV infection who are initiati...

A Controlled, In Vivo, Pilot Study to Assess the Recovery and Survival of Radiolabeled Autologous INTERCEPT Treated 7-Day Stored Apheresis Platelet Components in 35% Plasma and 65% InterSol and 7-Day Stored Apheresis Platelet Components in 100% Plasma

The objective of this study is to test the hypothesis that INTERCEPT platelet components stored for 7 days retain sufficient viability for therapeutic efficacy. The post-infusion recovery ...

Determining Normal Values of BNP Levels for the Minicare BNP IVD Assay.

Main objective is to determine normal values for BNP levels for the Minicare BNP using K2-EDTA venous whole blood and K2-EDTA plasma samples from healthy subjects. K2-EDTA whole blood and...

IDIS Project Work Package 2: Establishing a Biobank at ITM and Collaborating Centres

The IDIS study aims to develop a new rapid diagnostic test for invasive salmonellosis using samples (blood, urine) collected from patients with fever and healthy controls at the Institute ...

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Testing erythrocytes to determine presence or absence of blood-group antigens, testing of serum to determine the presence or absence of antibodies to these antigens, and selecting biocompatible blood by crossmatching samples from the donor against samples from the recipient. Crossmatching is performed prior to transfusion.

Any liquid used to replace blood plasma, usually a saline solution, often with serum albumins, dextrans or other preparations. These substances do not enhance the oxygen- carrying capacity of blood, but merely replace the volume. They are also used to treat dehydration.

The urea concentration of the blood stated in terms of nitrogen content. Serum (plasma) urea nitrogen is approximately 12% higher than blood urea nitrogen concentration because of the greater protein content of red blood cells. Increases in blood or serum urea nitrogen are referred to as azotemia and may have prerenal, renal, or postrenal causes. (From Saunders Dictionary & Encyclopedia of Laboratory Medicine and Technology, 1984)

The amount of PLASMA that perfuses the KIDNEYS per unit time, approximately 10% greater than effective renal plasma flow (RENAL PLASMA FLOW, EFFECTIVE). It should be differentiated from the RENAL BLOOD FLOW; (RBF), which refers to the total volume of BLOOD flowing through the renal vasculature, while the renal plasma flow refers to the rate of plasma flow (RPF).

Proteins that are present in blood serum, including SERUM ALBUMIN; BLOOD COAGULATION FACTORS; and many other types of proteins.
