Platelet rescue by macrophage depletion in obese ADAMTS13 deficient mice at risk for thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura.

07:00 EST 9th November 2017 | BioPortfolio

Summary of "Platelet rescue by macrophage depletion in obese ADAMTS13 deficient mice at risk for thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura."

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is caused by the absence of ADAMTS13 activity. Thrombocytopenia is presumably related to the formation of microthrombi rich in von Willebrand Factor (VWF) and platelets. Obesity may be a risk factor for TTP; it is associated with abundance of macrophages that may phagocytose platelets.

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

An ADAMTS protease that contains eight thrombospondin (TS) motifs. It cleaves VON WILLEBRAND FACTOR to control vWF-mediated THROMBOSIS. Mutations in the ADAMTS13 gene have been identified in familial cases of PURPURA, THROMBOTIC THROMBOCYTOPENIC and defects in ADAMTS13 activity are associated with MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION; BRAIN ISCHEMIA; PRE-ECLAMPSIA; and MALARIA.

A congenital bleeding disorder with prolonged bleeding time, absence of aggregation of platelets in response to most agents, especially ADP, and impaired or absent clot retraction. Activities devoted to freeing persons or animals from danger to life or well-being in accidents, fires, bombings, floods, earthquakes, other disasters and life-threatening conditions. While usually performed by team efforts, rescue work is not restricted to organized services.
