Can inhibition of retinoic acid biosynthesis function as a non-hormonal female contraceptive?

Summary of "Can inhibition of retinoic acid biosynthesis function as a non-hormonal female contraceptive?"

Vitamin A deficient females have reduced fertility due to decreased retinoic acid production. WIN 18,446 inhibits retinoic acid biosynthesis and functions as a contraceptive in males. We tested whether WIN 18,446 treatment would suppress fertility in female mice.

2-Bromopalmitate targets retinoic acid receptor alpha and overcomes all-trans retinoic acid resistance of acute promyelocytic leukemia.

Fatty acid oxidation dependency of leukemia cells has been documented in recent studies. Pharmacologic inhibition of fatty acid oxidation, thereby, displays significant effects in suppressing leukemia...

TRANSPARENT TESTA 4-mediated flavonoids negatively affect embryonic fatty acid biosynthesis in Arabidopsis.

Flavonoids are involved in many physiological processes in plants. TRANSPARENT TESTA 4 (TT4) acts at the first step of flavonoid biosynthesis, and the loss of TT4 function causes a lack of flavonoid. ...

Hormonal contraceptive affects heterosexual but not homosexual behavior in free-ranging female Japanese macaques over 17 mating seasons.

We assessed the effect of a progestin-based contraceptive treatment (chlormadinone acetate) on female heterosexual and homosexual behaviors in a free-ranging group of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata...

Title: Hormonal Contraceptive Use is Associated with Higher Total but Unaltered Free 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Serum Concentrations.

Hormonal contraceptive (HC) intake is associated with higher total 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) concentrations but the effect of HC on free 25(OH)D is unclear.

Retinoic Acid Maintains Function of Neural Crest-Derived Ocular and Craniofacial Structures in Adult Zebrafish.

Retinoic acid (RA) is required for embryonic formation of the anterior segment of the eye and craniofacial structures. The present study further investigated the role of RA in maintaining the function...

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

A subtype of RETINOIC ACID RECEPTORS that are specific for 9-cis-retinoic acid which function as nuclear TRANSCRIPTION FACTORS that regulate multiple signalling pathways.

Chemical substances or agents with contraceptive activity in females. Use for female contraceptive agents in general or for which there is no specific heading.

Proteins in the nucleus or cytoplasm that specifically bind RETINOIC ACID or RETINOL and trigger changes in the behavior of cells. Retinoic acid receptors, like steroid receptors, are ligand-activated transcription regulators. Several types have been recognized.

A cytochrome P450 enzyme family whose members function in the metabolism of RETINOIC ACID. It includes RETINOIC ACID 4-HYDROXYLASE.

A cytochrome P450 enzyme that resides in the ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM. It catalyzes the conversion of trans-RETINOIC ACID to 4-hydroxyretinoic acid.
