Exercise is accepted as an important contribution to the rehabilitation of patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study aims to better understand the possible causes for lack of consensus and reviews the effects of three exercise modalities (aerobic, resistance and combined exercise) on central hemodynamics, arterial stiffness and cardiac function for better rehabilitation strategies in CVD.

A state of elevated cardiac output due to conditions of either increased hemodynamic demand or reduced cardiac oxygen output. Controlled physical activity, more strenuous than at rest, which is performed in order to allow assessment of physiological functions, particularly cardiovascular and pulmonary, but also aerobic capacity. Maximal (most intense) exercise is usually required but submaximal exercise is also used. The intensity of exercise is often graded, using criteria such as rate of work done, oxygen consumption, and heart rate.
