Is Initial rhythm in OHCA a predictor of preceding no flow time? Implications for bystander response and ECPR candidacy evaluation.

Shockable cardiac rhythms are associated with improved outcomes among out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA). Initial cardiac rhythm may also be predictive of a short preceding no-flow duration. We ex...

Self-reported nocturnal sleep duration and glycosylated hemoglobin A in the Study of Cardiovascular Risks in Adolescents (ERICA).

At present, epidemiologic studies regarding the relationship between sleep duration and glucose metabolism in adolescents are scarce. The objective was to investigate the association between self-repo...

The Reaction of Oxy Hemoglobin with Nitrite: Mechanism, Antioxidant-Modulated Effect, and Implications for Blood Substitute Evaluation.

The autocatalytic reaction between nitrite and the oxy form of globins involves free radicals. For myoglobin (Mb), an initial binding of nitrite to the iron-coordinated oxygen molecule was proposed; t...

Manipulating hemoglobin oxygenation using silica nanoparticles: a novel prospect for artificial oxygen carriers.

Recently, nanoparticles have attracted much attention as new scaffolds for hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers (HBOCs). Indeed, the development of bionanotechnology paves the way for the rational design ...

Duration of storage influences the hemoglobin rising effect of red blood cells in patients undergoing major abdominal surgery.

After transfusion of senescent red blood cells (RBCs) a considerable fraction is rapidly cleared from the recipients' circulation. Thus, transfusion of senescent RBCs may be less effective in terms of...

Vardenafil in Greenlight(TM) Laser Surgery of Benign Prostate Hypertrophy

The greenlight laser has an absorption maximum which is exactly the same as for hemoglobin. In the presence of hemoglobin, its application causes vaporization of the tissue and this effect...

Doppler Flow Wires in Cerebral Angiography

The purpose of this study is to use a wire with a Doppler tip to measure blood flow in vessels in the brain and determine hemodynamic factors associated with treatment success or failure. ...

This is a prospective observational study on incident peritoneal dialysis patients on the effect of hemoglobin level and vascular reactivity using the generic erythropoietin alpha. The obj...

High Flow Oxygen Therapy and Acute Ischemic Stroke

Hypoxemia is common in acute ischemic stroke and associated with neurological deterioration and mortality. However, the benefit of oxygen therapy is controversial. Severity of stroke may a...

Efficacy of Vorinostat to Induce Fetal Hemoglobin in Sickle Cell Disease

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a hereditary anemia that causes the red blood cells to change their shape from a round and doughnut-like shape to a half-moon/crescent, or sickled shape. Peopl...

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

The twisting of the SPERMATIC CORD due to an anatomical abnormality that left the TESTIS mobile and dangling in the SCROTUM. The initial effect of testicular torsion is obstruction of venous return. Depending on the duration and degree of cord rotation, testicular symptoms range from EDEMA to interrupted arterial flow and testicular pain. If blood flow to testis is absent for 4 to 6 h, SPERMATOGENESIS may be permanently lost.

The major component of hemoglobin in the fetus. This HEMOGLOBIN has two alpha and two gamma polypeptide subunits in comparison to normal adult hemoglobin, which has two alpha and two beta polypeptide subunits. Fetal hemoglobin concentrations can be elevated (usually above 0.5%) in children and adults affected by LEUKEMIA and several types of ANEMIA.

A noninvasive technique that uses the differential absorption properties of hemoglobin and myoglobin to evaluate tissue oxygenation and indirectly can measure regional hemodynamics and blood flow. Near-infrared light (NIR) can propagate through tissues and at particular wavelengths is differentially absorbed by oxygenated vs. deoxygenated forms of hemoglobin and myoglobin. Illumination of intact tissue with NIR allows qualitative assessment of changes in the tissue concentration of these molecules. The analysis is also used to determine body composition.

Blood is a specialized bodily fluid that delivers necessary substances to the body's cells (in animals) – such as nutrients and oxygen – and transports waste products away from those same cells.  In vertebrates, it is composed of blo...
