Beta lactams represent perhaps the most important class of antibiotics yet discovered. However, despite many years of active research none of the currently approved drugs in this class combine oral activity with long duration of action. Recent devel-opments suggest that new beta lactam antibiotics with such a profile would have utility in the treatment of tuberculosis. Consequently the historical beta lactam pharmacokinetic data has been compiled and analysed to identify possible directions and drug discovery strategies aimed towards new beta lactam antibiotics with this profile.

Beta-lactam dose optimisation in critical care is a current priority. We aimed to review the PK of three commonly used beta-lactams (amoxicillin+/-clavulanate, piperacillin-tazobactam and meropenem) t...
Prolonged infusion of beta-lactam antibiotics is broadly recognized as a strategy to optimize antibiotic therapy by achieving a higher percentage of time that concentrations remain above the minimal i...
Several clinical trials have demonstrated the efficacy of continuous infusion (CI) beta-lactam (BL) antibiotics in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients; however, little is known regarding pharmacokinetic cha...
Therapeutic drug monitoring is used for aminoglycosides and vancomycin, and has been proposed for β-lactam antibiotics. Clinical blood samples in the ICU are often obtained via an existing vascular c...
The presence of antibiotics in soils could be due to natural production by soil microorganisms or to the effect of anthropogenic activities. However, the impact of these compounds on plant physiology ...
GCX damage and its relationship to pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of beta lactam antibiotics in critically ill Hypothesis to be tested: GCX damage impairs pharmacodynamics and pharm...
A study to report the outcomes of patients who fail to respond to beta-lactam and macrolide antibiotics in the community
The study investigates whether Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) and continuous infusion (CI) of beta-lactam antibiotics optimises target concentrations in patients with bacteraemia.
The purpose of this study is to find out whether continuous infusion of beta-lactam antibiotics or intermittent infusion or beta-lactam antibiotics, offers more health advantages to patien...
At antibiotic stewardship of the University Hospital of Schleswig-Holsten it was noticed that there are much less studies measuring drug levels in severe burned patients than are required....
Nonsusceptibility of bacteria to the action of the beta-lactam antibiotics. Mechanisms responsible for beta-lactam resistance may be degradation of antibiotics by BETA-LACTAMASES, failure of antibiotics to penetrate, or low-affinity binding of antibiotics to targets.
Monocyclic, bacterially produced or semisynthetic beta-lactam antibiotics. They lack the double ring construction of the traditional beta-lactam antibiotics and can be easily synthesized.
A beta-lactamase inhibitor with very weak antibacterial action. The compound prevents antibiotic destruction of beta-lactam antibiotics by inhibiting beta-lactamases, thus extending their spectrum activity. Combinations of sulbactam with beta-lactam antibiotics have been used successfully for the therapy of infections caused by organisms resistant to the antibiotic alone.
Enzymes found in many bacteria which catalyze the hydrolysis of the amide bond in the beta-lactam ring. Well known antibiotics destroyed by these enzymes are penicillins and cephalosporins.
Naturally occurring family of beta-lactam cephalosporin-type antibiotics having a 7-methoxy group and possessing marked resistance to the action of beta-lactamases from gram-positive and gram-negative organisms.
Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by bacteria belonging to the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex. Over nine million new cases of TB, and nearly two million deaths from TB, are estimated to occur around the world every year, and new inf...
