Primary leiomyosarcoma of the inferior vena cava (IVC) is a rare soft tissue sarcoma. Techniques for caval reconstruction after tumor resection vary widely. Our single-center experience serves as one of the largest reviews of caval reconstruction using polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) interposition grafts published in the past 10 years.

A procedure in which total right atrial or total caval blood flow is channeled directly into the pulmonary artery or into a small right ventricle that serves only as a conduit. The principal congenital malformations for which this operation is useful are TRICUSPID ATRESIA and single ventricle with pulmonary stenosis.

Prosthesis, usually heart valve, composed of biological material and whose durability depends upon the stability of the material after pretreatment, rather than regeneration by host cell ingrowth. Durability is achieved 1, mechanically by the interposition of a cloth, usually polytetrafluoroethylene, between the host and the graft, and 2, chemically by stabilization of the tissue by intermolecular linking, usually with glutaraldehyde, after removal of antigenic components, or the use of reconstituted and restructured biopolymers.

Interposition of a portion of the colon (e.g., SIGMOID COLON) between the liver and the diaphragm. It is associated with abdominal pain, vomiting, constipation, anorexia and volvulus. Chilaiditi anomaly refers to asymptomatic interposition.

Surgical venous shunt between the portal and systemic circulation to effect decompression of the portal circulation. It is performed primarily in the treatment of bleeding esophageal varices resulting from portal hypertension. Types of shunt include portacaval, splenorenal, mesocaval, splenocaval, left gastric-caval (coronary-caval), portarenal, umbilicorenal, and umbilicocaval.
