Summary of "Synthesis of sulfamethoxazole and sulfabenzamide metal complexes; evaluation of their antibacterial activity."

The present work describes the synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of ten different metal complexes of sulfabenzamide and sulfamethoxazole as ligands (M-SBZ, M-SMZ). Spectroscopic methods such as H NMR, UV-Vis spectroscopy analysis, FTIR and XRD confirmed the coordination of both ligands to metals through the nitrogen and oxygen atoms of the sulfonamide group. Both sulfabenzamide and sulfamethoxazole metal complexes were active against Gram-positive and negative bacterial strains. Sulfamethoxazole complexes showed their MIC values from 0.125 to 2.000 g ml and sulfabenzamide complexes exhibited related MIC values from 1.000 to 2.000 g ml. Finally Zn (II) sulfamethoxazole with an inexpensive and common metal displayed more activity than its free ligand drug.

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

A bacteriostatic antibacterial agent that interferes with folic acid synthesis in susceptible bacteria. Its broad spectrum of activity has been limited by the development of resistance. (From Martindale, The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 30th ed, p208)

Neutral or negatively charged ligands bonded to metal cations or neutral atoms. The number of ligand atoms to which the metal center is directly bonded is the metal cation's coordination number, and this number is always greater than the regular valence or oxidation number of the metal. A coordination complex can be negative, neutral, or positively charged.

A drug combination with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. It is effective in the treatment of many infections, including PNEUMOCYSTIS PNEUMONIA in AIDS.

A pyrimidine inhibitor of dihydrofolate reductase, it is an antibacterial related to PYRIMETHAMINE. The interference with folic acid metabolism may cause a depression of hematopoiesis. It is potentiated by SULFONAMIDES and the TRIMETHOPRIM-SULFAMETHOXAZOLE COMBINATION is the form most often used. It is sometimes used alone as an antimalarial. TRIMETHOPRIM RESISTANCE has been reported.

This drug combination has proved to be an effective therapeutic agent with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. It is effective in the treatment of many infections, including PNEUMOCYSTIS PNEUMONIA in AIDS.
