Summary of "Vision: Filling Black Holes."

At night our visual system does not have information on the center of the visual field, yet it manages to fill this gap. A recent study uncovers details and paradoxes of this phenomenon.

Hole superiority effect with 3D figures formed by binocular disparity.

The global-first theory of topological perception claims that topological perception is prior to the perception of local features (e.g., Chen, 1982, 2005). Our previous studies demonstrated a hole sup...

Horizon Hair of Extremal Black Holes and Measurements at Null Infinity.

It is shown that the conserved charges on the event horizon and the Cauchy horizon associated with scalar perturbations on extremal black holes are externally measurable from null infinity. This sugge...

Quantum Transfiguration of Kruskal Black Holes.

We present a new effective description of macroscopic Kruskal black holes that incorporates corrections due to quantum geometry effects of loop quantum gravity. It encompasses both the "interior" regi...

Black Hole Disks in Galactic Nuclei.

Gravitational torques among objects orbiting a supermassive black hole drive the rapid reorientation of orbital planes in nuclear star clusters (NSCs), a process known as vector resonant relaxation. I...

Massive Boson Superradiant Instability of Black Holes: Nonlinear Growth, Saturation, and Gravitational Radiation.

We study the superradiant instability of a massive boson around a spinning black hole in full general relativity without assuming spatial symmetries. We focus on the case of a rapidly spinning black h...

Preoperative Progression of Macular Holes

Knowledge of the natural history and progression of macular holes is mainly limited to the studies from the pre-optical coherence tomography era. By observing macular holes preoperatively ...

Osteolysis Development Around Uncemented Cups With or Without Screw Holes

In order to investigate the role of acetabular cup screw holes for the transport of osteolysis-inducing particles in a total hip arthroplasty articulation, the investigators compare the am...

Adult Providing Access to the Visual Environment (PAVE) - Glaucoma Pilot

We wish to evaluate a potential training program for patients with glaucoma, to become more efficient users of prescribed low vision devices for distance and near vision tasks. We hypothes...

Comparison Between Different Filling Pressures in Operative Outpatient Hysteroscopy

The study aims to compare different filling pressures in operative outpatient hysteroscopy. Women will be divided into 3 groups. The hysteroscope will be introduced in the uterine cavity. ...

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Vision considered to be inferior to normal vision as represented by accepted standards of acuity, field of vision, or motility. Low vision generally refers to visual disorders that are caused by diseases that cannot be corrected by refraction (e.g., MACULAR DEGENERATION; RETINITIS PIGMENTOSA; DIABETIC RETINOPATHY, etc.).

Application of tests and examinations to identify visual defects or vision disorders occurring in specific populations, as in school children, the elderly, etc. It is differentiated from VISION TESTS, which are given to evaluate/measure individual visual performance not related to a specific population.

Endodontic procedure performed to induce TOOTH APEX barrier development. ROOT CANAL FILLING MATERIALS are used to repair open apex or DENTAL PULP NECROSIS in an immature tooth. CALCIUM HYDROXIDE and mineral trioxide aggregate are commonly used as the filling materials.

Filarial infection of the eyes transmitted from person to person by bites of Onchocerca volvulus-infected black flies. The microfilariae of Onchocerca are thus deposited beneath the skin. They migrate through various tissues including the eye. Those persons infected have impaired vision and up to 20% are blind. The incidence of eye lesions has been reported to be as high as 30% in Central America and parts of Africa.

Defects of color vision are mainly hereditary traits but can be secondary to acquired or developmental abnormalities in the CONES (RETINA). Severity of hereditary defects of color vision depends on the degree of mutation of the ROD OPSINS genes (on X CHROMOSOME and CHROMOSOME 3) that code the photopigments for red, green and blue.
