Multisite measurement of regional oxygen saturation in Fontan patients with or without protein-losing enteropathy at rest and during exercise.

Protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) is a severe complication of Fontan circulation with increased risk of end-organ dysfunction. We evaluated tissue oxygenation via near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) at d...

Intradialytic virtual reality exercise: Increasing physical activity through technology.

Intradialytic exercise can improve physical function and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in hemodialysis (HD) patients, but is not implemented in routine clinical practice. Virtual reality (VR)...

Ventilatory and sensory responses to incremental exercise in adults with a Fontan circulation.

Many adults with single ventricle congenital heart disease who have undergone a Fontan procedure have abnormal pulmonary function resembling restrictive lung disease. Whether this contributes to venti...

The influence of hypoxia and prolonged exercise on attentional performance at high and extreme altitudes: A pilot study.

Exposure to hypoxic conditions is reported to impair cognitive performance. Further, moderate physical exercise improves cognitive function, but little is known about the influence of exercise on cogn...

Analysis of Inflammatory Cytokines in Postoperative Fontan Pleural Drainage.

Prolonged pleural drainage is a common complication in patients after Fontan palliation and is associated with short- and long- term morbidities. Among many potential etiologies, prolonged drainage ha...

Impact of Vitamin C on Endothelial Function and Exercise Capacity in Fontan-Palliated Patients

In this study, investigators will evaluate the effect of vitamin C on endothelial function, exercise tolerance and quality of life in patients with a single ventricle who have been palliat...

Upright Versus Supine Exercise Testing in Fontan-palliated Patients

Fontan-palliated patients comprise an interesting group of single-ventricle patients who are dependent upon passive return of blood from the body to the lungs. Systemic venous pressures a...

Fontan Udenafil Exercise Longitudinal Assessment Trial

This study will evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of udenafil, an orally administered, potent and selective inhibitor of PDE5, versus placebo for the treatment of adolescent subjec...

Physical Activity in Fontan Patients

The purpose of this study is to determine which is the most effective intervention for increasing lifestyle physical activity in Fontan patients: an education (stage of change) interventio...

Effect of Carvedilol on Exercise Performance in Fontan Patients

This study evaluates the effect of carvedilol in patients who have undergone a Fontan heart operation. All participants will receive carvedilol and placebo for 12 weeks. Exercise tests wil...

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Controlled physical activity, more strenuous than at rest, which is performed in order to allow assessment of physiological functions, particularly cardiovascular and pulmonary, but also aerobic capacity. Maximal (most intense) exercise is usually required but submaximal exercise is also used. The intensity of exercise is often graded, using criteria such as rate of work done, oxygen consumption, and heart rate.

Diet modification and physical exercise to improve the ability to carry out daily tasks and perform physical activities.

Tapering-off physical activity from vigorous to light, to gradually return the body to pre-exercise condition and metabolic state.

Physical activity which is usually regular and done with the intention of improving or maintaining PHYSICAL FITNESS or HEALTH. Contrast with PHYSICAL EXERTION which is concerned largely with the physiologic and metabolic response to energy expenditure.

Asthma attacks following a period of exercise. Usually the induced attack is short-lived and regresses spontaneously. The magnitude of postexertional airway obstruction is strongly influenced by the environment in which exercise is performed (i.e. inhalation of cold air during physical exertion markedly augments the severity of the airway obstruction; conversely, warm humid air blunts or abolishes it).
