The Golden Proportion in the scallop geometry of normal mitral valves. When nature plays with jigsaw puzzles.

Summary of "The Golden Proportion in the scallop geometry of normal mitral valves. When nature plays with jigsaw puzzles."

The Golden Proportion is a particular geometric ratio between two segments. It results in an irrational number, commonly rounded to 1.618, or 0.618, and showing unique geometrical/mathematical properties. Its presence has been documented in a huge amount of natural settings, as well as the human body and the heart. In light of a previous research of ours, about its presence in the Coaptation Triangle, we investigated the dimensions of both mitral leaflets in healthy mitral valves and then compared our results to literature data, in order to search whether this proportional pattern could be extended to other valve aspects.

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Backflow of blood from the LEFT VENTRICLE into the LEFT ATRIUM due to imperfect closure of the MITRAL VALVE. This can lead to mitral valve regurgitation.

Abnormal protrusion or billowing of one or both of the leaflets of MITRAL VALVE into the LEFT ATRIUM during SYSTOLE. This allows the backflow of blood into left atrium leading to MITRAL VALVE INSUFFICIENCY; SYSTOLIC MURMURS; or CARDIAC ARRHYTHMIA.

Heart murmurs which are systolic in timing. They occur between the first and the second HEART SOUNDS, between the closure of MITRAL VALVE and TRICUSPID VALVE and the closure of semilunar aortic and pulmonary valves. Systolic murmurs include ejection murmurs and regurgitant murmurs.

A family of Primates of the suborder Strepsirhini containing six genera. The family is distributed in parts of Africa, India, Asia, and the Philippines. The six genera are: Arctocebus (golden potto), GALAGO (bush babies), Loris (slender loris), Nycticebus (slow loris), and Perodicticus (potto). Lorises and pottos are relatively common except for Arctocebus, the golden potto. All are arboreal and nocturnal.

Devices, usually incorporating unidirectional valves, which are surgically inserted in the sclera to maintain normal intraocular pressure.
