Summary of "Generalizing the use of a multidimensional approach to move towards an effective Addictovigilance."

After the publication of an article discussing the methodological options to detect the diversion potential of prescription drugs, this letter presents the multidimensional functioning of the French Addictovigilance System. This system aims at monitoring all substances with abuse potential, relying on a network of experts specialized in clinical and fundamental pharmacology. For more than twenty-five years, we have created collaborations with partners at the interface with field data related to substance use and the potential related disorders. When relevant depending on the context, these data sources are explored and crossed to analyse the abuse potential of one given substance. This organisational approach is useful to detect early Addictovigilance warning signals, and to take appropriate measures. Generalizing such a multidimensional approach outside France appears an appealing option to move towards more effective Addictovigilance systems at the international level.

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Discrete concentrations of energy, apparently massless elementary particles, that move at the speed of light. They are the unit or quantum of electromagnetic radiation. Photons are emitted when electrons move from one energy state to another. (From Hawley's Condensed Chemical Dictionary, 11th ed)

Any situation where an animal or human is trained to respond differentially to two stimuli (e.g., approach and avoidance) under reward and punishment conditions and subsequently trained under reversed reward values (i.e., the approach which was previously rewarded is punished and vice versa).

A nondirective psychotherapy approach originated by Carl Rogers. The goals of therapy are to promote the client’s congruence, self awareness, and self acceptance. This approach views the client as naturally directed toward self actualization, and only needing facilitative conditions in order to promote this tendency.

Brief therapeutic approach which is ameliorative rather than curative of acute psychiatric emergencies. Used in contexts such as emergency rooms of psychiatric or general hospitals, or in the home or place of crisis occurrence, this treatment approach focuses on interpersonal and intrapsychic factors and environmental modification. (APA Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms, 7th ed)

A histamine H1 receptor antagonist that is effective in the treatment of chronic urticaria, dermatitis, and histamine-mediated pruritus. Unlike its major metabolite CETIRIZINE, it does cause drowsiness. It is also effective as an antiemetic, for relief of anxiety and tension, and as a sedative.
