Summary of "Proteomic investigation of human skeletal muscle before and after 70 days of head down bed rest with or without exercise and testosterone countermeasures."

Long-term head-down bed rest (HDBR) results in musculoskeletal losses similar to those observed during long-term space flight. Agents such as testosterone, in addition to regular exercise, are effective countermeasures for reducing loss of skeletal muscle mass and function.

Aerobic and resistance exercise training reverses age-dependent decline in NAD salvage capacity in human skeletal muscle.

Aging decreases skeletal muscle mass and strength, but aerobic and resistance exercise training maintains skeletal muscle function. NAD is a coenzyme for ATP production and a required substrate for en...

Identification of Candidate Protein Markers in Skeletal Muscle of Laminin-211-Deficient CMD Type 1A-Patients.

Laminin-211 deficiency leads to the most common form of congenital muscular dystrophy in childhood, MDC1A. The clinical picture is characterized by severe muscle weakness, brain abnormalities and dela...

Fatty acid type-specific regulation of SIRT1 does not affect insulin sensitivity in human skeletal muscle.

The nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide-dependent deacetylase, sirtuin (SIRT)1, in skeletal muscle is reduced in insulin-resistant states. However, whether this is an initial mechanism responsible for m...

Engineering an Environment for the Study of Fibrosis: A 3D Human Muscle Model with Endothelium Specificity and Endomysium.

The integration of vascular structures into in vitro cultured tissues provides realistic models of complex tissue-vascular interactions. Despite the incidence and impact of muscle-wasting disorders, ...

Vaspin promotes insulin sensitivity of elderly muscle and is upregulated in obesity.

Adipokines have emerged as central mediators of insulin sensitivity and metabolism, in part due to the known association of obesity with metabolic syndrome disorders such as type 2 diabetes. Recent st...

Glucocorticoid Inflammation Paradox in Human Skeletal Muscle

In this project, we propose to investigate the metabolic consequences of glucocorticoid therapy, given orally as a 6 day Medrol Dose pack, on human skeletal muscle as measured by western b...

The Regulation of Human Skeletal Muscle Mass by Contractile Perturbation

It is well known that periods of weight training lead to increases in skeletal muscle size and strength. In contrast, periods of inactivity such as bed rest or immobilization result in los...

Fasting and Exercise-induced Changes in Human Skeletal Muscle

This study examines the impact of increasing energetic stress during an 8-hour fast on metabolic pathways in human skeletal muscle. Specifically, participants will undergo two 8-hour fasti...

Skeletal Muscle Atrophy and Dysfunction in Human Cancer

Cancer and its treatment can have profound effects on skeletal muscle, the most well-recognized being atrophy, weakness and diminished oxidative capacity. These adaptations negatively impa...

Alterations of Muscle Secretome Associated With Muscle Atrophy Caused by Glucocorticoids

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Large, multinucleate single cells, either cylindrical or prismatic in shape, that form the basic unit of SKELETAL MUSCLE. They consist of MYOFIBRILS enclosed within and attached to the SARCOLEMMA. They are derived from the fusion of skeletal myoblasts (MYOBLASTS, SKELETAL) into a syncytium, followed by differentiation.

A subtype of mitochondrial ADP, ATP translocase found primarily in heart muscle (MYOCARDIUM) and skeletal muscle (MUSCLE, SKELETAL).

Abnormal increase in skeletal or smooth muscle tone. Skeletal muscle hypertonicity may be associated with PYRAMIDAL TRACT lesions or BASAL GANGLIA DISEASES.

Elongated, spindle-shaped, quiescent myoblasts lying in close contact with adult skeletal muscle. They are thought to play a role in muscle repair and regeneration.

Drugs used for their actions on skeletal muscle. Included are agents that act directly on skeletal muscle, those that alter neuromuscular transmission (NEUROMUSCULAR BLOCKING AGENTS), and drugs that act centrally as skeletal muscle relaxants (MUSCLE RELAXANTS, CENTRAL). Drugs used in the treatment of movement disorders are ANTI-DYSKINESIA AGENTS.
